Citing Democrat obstructionism, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has announced that he’s canceling most of the August recess.
“Due to the historic obstruction by Senate Democrats of the president’s nominees, and the goal of passing appropriations bills prior to the end of the fiscal year, the August recess has been canceled. Senators should expect to remain in session in August to pass legislation, including appropriations bills, and to make additional progress on the president’s nominees.”
Background: It is expected that Senators will have a state work period during the first full week in August before returning for the rest of the month.
McConnell is right on the obstruction of judicial nominees and even uncontroversial presidential appointments.
Dem Obstruction Hits Century Mark
Senate Democrats Have Already Forced 100 Cloture Votes On President Trump’s Nominees In His First Two Years Vs. 24 Combined For The Previous 6 Presidents In Theirs
And while this may be true, let’s not lose sight of the fact that this is a raw political play designed to maximize GOP chances of increasing its Senate majority in November. If vulnerable Red State Democrats are in Washington, they can’t be back home campaigning.
If McConnell was cancelling August recess for the Senate to do actual work, that'd be something. But no, it's just to screw over Democrats who are disproportionately running for re-election.
