The attempt by the media to manufacture and create an outrageous narrative branding President Trump a racist may turn out to be one of the most ill thought out misadventures in history. To a certain extent the media has gotten used to being able to spin whatever damaging narrative they wish without fear of any pushback from a Republican White House or candidate. Think about George H. W. Bush and the supermarket scanner. Those days are gone…at least for now.
The background is that President Trump was attending a White House conference on immigration and this exchange took place:
Sheriff Mims: “There could be an MS-13 member I know about — if they don’t reach a certain threshold, I cannot tell ICE about it.”
Mr. Trump: “We have people coming into the country, or trying to come in — and we’re stopping a lot of them — but we’re taking people out of the country. You wouldn’t believe how bad these people are. These aren’t people. These are animals. And we’re taking them out of the country at a level and at a rate that’s never happened before. And because of the weak laws, they come in fast, we get them, we release them, we get them again, we bring them out. It’s crazy.”
As I note in the post, not only is Trump clearly talking about MS-13, he’s using language that is nearly the same that he used in a July, 2017 speech to law enforcement officials on Long Island.
The media tried to claim that Trump was referring to all immigrants. By Monday, the White House press office was trolling the media with a fact sheet on MS-13 that called them animals eight times. Shortly after, there was a poll question asked which found that 56% of Americans thought calling MS-13 animals was “fair.”
Nancy Pelosi weighed in on the controversy

The RNC took Pelosi’s disingenuous comments and turned them in an political ad:
Where many (dare I say most) other GOP officials and candidates would be reticent to go after the House Minority Leader, Donald Trump is not troubled by the thought at all. In fact, he wasn’t reticent about going after Phil (who is this guy? I never heard of him) Bredesen and Chuck Schumer. This is from a rally Trump held in Nashville yesterday. This is quintessential Trump:
Of course, the MS-13 lover Nancy Pelosi. She loves MS-13. Can you imagine? Remember? I said they’re animals and she said ‘How dare you say that, how dare you say that.’ Have you seen what they’ve done? Have you seen what they’re doing to us? And we’re taking them out of our country by the thousands. Out. Out. By the thousands. Chuck and Nancy. They don’t want the wall. They want open borders. They are more interested in taking care of criminals than they are in taking care of you. (FACT CHECK: True)
Trump knows what the stakes are this fall. If the House goes Democrat there will almost certainly be a bill of impeachment voted against him. He’s smart enough to know that taking the high road…a route he’s not particularly inclined to follow in the best of times…is not the way to avoid the House flipping. He has to fire up the base and he has to throw as much mud as possible.
Get ready for a lot more on Nancy Pelosi and MS-13.
